Walter & Alfred Gilbey started as importers of wines from South Africa in 1857 from their premises in Oxford Street. Expanding into Edinburgh & Dublin they stated selling Whiskies & London Gin under their own name.
By 1903 Gilbeys owned Glen Spey, Strathmill & Knockando Malt Whisky Distilleries.
In 1962 they merged & became International Distillers & Vintners, by 1997 they were owned by Grand Metropolitan & merged again with Guinness PLC to part of Diagro PLC.
Their name now only survives on Diageo's London Gin.
